Breath-holding spells occur in toddlers in response to frustration or minor injury, producing cyanosis or pallor, loss of consciousness and sometimes brief stiffening or jerking that is easily mistaken for a seizure. Syncope, or fainting, particularly in older children and adolescents, can produce brief convulsive movements and loss of consciousness that closely resembles a generalised seizure
